In 2024 I was invited by the artists and researchers Rita Mota and Giuliana Almasio to write and illustrate a piece for their website/publication: Assossiassão.

About Assossiassão:

Starting from the proposal of the artist as host (and not an “unquestionable provider of excellence for a passive audience”), we propose an artistic and critical practice carried out in an intersectional way, recognizing the particular context of each element involved in the process and seeking to invite various points of view.

[1] In “Death to audience development strategies that are not part of an integrated model of creation, programming and public policies, death! Pim!”, Mafalda Dâmaso, in Fradique, T. (ed.), The Public Goes to the Theater. Meetings on Audience Reception and Engagement Policies, 2019.

The assossiassão project aims to function as a structure for critical and artistic production. Mapping relationships between unexpected elements and expressing themselves through multiple areas, always with a DIY attitude. Editorially, we give preference to reflections of a critical nature, which use the tool of critical thinking in their analysis. We define ourselves not only by the themes we address but by the way we approach them.

We began this project taking inspiration from a question posed by Paulo Freire, made at the International Symposium for Literacy, in Persepolis, in 1975:

[2] We arrived at this reflection through the research of Moacir Gadotti, Invitation to read Paulo Freire – Thought and Action in Teaching, published in 2004 by Editora Scipione.

“It is not enough to know how to mechanically read ‘Eve saw the grape’. It is necessary to understand the position that Eve occupies in her social context, who works to produce grapes and who profits from this work.”

All of our material is freely distributed, promoting public access and participation. Our website functions as a digital archive and contains our process and results in full. We emphasize the need to properly reference the work of other authors when used, including our own material available on the website and in printed material.
